George Bell, Sr.
Bell graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1853 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He held the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Regular Army Artillery at the start of the Civil War. However, he spent most of the War in a staff position in the U.S. Army Commissary of Subsistence. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and served first as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Alexandria (VA) Army Depot, then as the Chief of the Washington, DC, Depot. In that position he was responsible for the supplies for the thousands of soldiers assigned to defend the Nation's Capital. He was brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Regular Army on 9 April 1865 for "faithful and meritorious service in the Subsistence Department during the War." He remained in the Regular Army after the war, and retired with the rank of Colonel in 1892. Personal George Jr., William and Susan's son, served in the U.S. Army and retired as a Major General. Death and Burial Brigadier General George Ball died on 2 January 1907 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, MD. |
