Fred Hubbard Baughman Fred Hubbard Baughman was born on 7 February 1926 in Michigan City, IN. He attended high school in Michigan City, IN, where he was the class valedictorian. He received his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944 and graduated in 1947, the last wartime three-year class and was commissioned as an Ensign on 6 June 1947. Baughman elected to pursue aviation and entered flight training; he was designated as a Naval Aviator on 31 March 1950. He was assigned to Squadron VP-22 and, as a Lieutenant J.G. flew 100 combat patrols in the Korean War. He then attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, earning his Master of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering. His next assignment was to the Naval Air Systems Command where he served as Project Manager of the S-3A aircraft and was promoted to Rear Admiral. His last active tour of duty was as Commander, Pacific Missile Test Center in Point Mugu, CA. At the time of his retirement, he was the ranking Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer and the Senior Line Officer on active duty. In Retirement After retiring, he worked in the private sector in various aeronautical pursuits as well as founding a consulting business. He also assisted the Navy and Department of Defense in developing the AEGIS ballistic missile defense system. Medals and Awards Legion of Merit (3 Awards) Death and Burial Rear Admiral Fred Hubbard Baughman died on 26 January 2004 in New Bern, NC. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
