George Morton McCarthy, Jr.
He married Myrtle Alberta Hatfield in Elizabethtown, KY. Military Service George served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of Company A, 192nd Tank Battalion "The Janesville 99." He was one of four members of this group who survived capture by the Japanese Army. He was the only one who did not surrender. He had fled into the Philippine hills along with 24 other men including Philippine scouts. During the next three years, he worked with them gathering intelligence on the enemy troops. He was listed as Missing in Action the entire time. He also served in the Korean Conflict and retired from the service in 1963 as a Master Sergeant. His headstone includes the words: NEVER SURRENDER Medals and Awards Silver Star Medal Combat Infantryman Badge Post-Military Life Following his retirement from the Army, George was employed at various places including: • Fairbanks Morse • Gibbs Manufacturing • University of Wisconsin - Rock County Campus from which he retired Death and Burial Master Sergeant George Morton McCarthy, Jr. died on 1 February 2003. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, Rock County, WI. George is survived by his 5 children: Joanna (Norman) Jenson, Daniel (JoAnn) McCarthy, Timothy (Chris) McCarthy, Vivian Alexander and Lisa (Dennis) Hatteberg; 9 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a brother, Patrick (Jean) McCarthy; and a sister, Kathleen McCarthy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a grandson, Christopher Fiedler; 3 brothers Stephen, Donald and James McCarthy; and a sister, Alice McCarthy. |
