Ernst D. Ellerbruch was born on 15 April 1917 in Elmhurst, IL. He was the son of Henry and Emma (Fiene) Ellerbruch. His school years were spent at St Paul Evangelical Lutheran School located in Addison, IL.

Military Service

On 23 June 1941, Ernst was inducted into the U.S. Army under the Selective Service Act. He received his military training at the following camps: Camp Roberts; Fort Lewis; Fort Ord; and Camp Pickett. He was sent overseas for duty in October 1942. Ernst was killed in action in North Africa.

Ernst was the first casualty of World War II from DuPage County, IL.

Death and Burial

Sergeant Ernst D. Ellerbruch was killed in action on 7 August 1943. He is buried at Zion Cemetery in Bensenville, DuPage County, IL.

He left behind his fiancé, Miss Emmie Schmale.
