Hermann Wilhelm Kuchneister Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Corporal Hermann Wilhelm Kuchneister (16 October 1877 - 1 February 1923) was a U.S. Marine who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Hermann Wilhelm Kuchneister was born on 16 October 1877 in Hamburg, Germany. After entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1897, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USSĀ Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Marine Corps Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Kuchneister displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action. Death and Burial Corporal Hermann Wilhelm Kuchneister died on 1 February 1923. He is buried at Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop, MA. |
