Peter Johnson Fireman First Class, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Fireman First Class Peter Johnson (29 December 1857 - unknown) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Peter Johnson was born on 29 December 1857 in Sumerland, England. After entering the U.S. Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Potomac. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Fireman First Class, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Vixen on the night of 28 May 1898. Following the explosion of the lower front manhole gasket of boiler A of the vessel, Johnson displayed great coolness and self-possession in entering the fireroom. |
