Frank J. Bart Sergeant, U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient World War I Sergeant Frank J. Bart (15 April 1883 - 31 March 1961) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during World War I. Frank J. Bart was born in New York City on 15 April 1883. He entered the U.S. Army at Newark, NJ. During World War I he served as a Private in Company C, 9th Infantry, 2nd Division. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions near Medeah Ferme, France, on 3 October 1918. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, Company C, 9th Infantry, 2nd Division. Place and date: Near Medeah Ferme, France, 3 October 1918. Citation: Pvt. Bart, being on duty as a company runner, when the advance was held up by machinegun fire voluntarily picked up an automatic rifle, ran out ahead of the line, and silenced a hostile machinegun nest, killing the German gunners. The advance then continued, and when it was again hindered shortly afterward by another machinegun nest this courageous soldier repeated his bold exploit by putting the second machinegun out of action. Death and Burial Private Frank J. Bart died on 31 March 1961. He is buried at Flower Hill Cemetery in North Bergen, NJ, in Section 25, Lot 26 & 27, Grave 6. |
